Health Department
Health covers many topics and affects everyone from individuals to the overall community. First Nations Health is under the responsibility of Health Canada. For individual health benefits (including Patient Transportation and Non-insured Health Benefits), Metlakatla members can log in to the members only pages.
Currently, Health Canada has three major goals of the on-reserve health planning process:
A recipient's plan is envisioned as a strategic plan for its health programs. It is the primary document identifying health needs, defining recipient capacity to respond, outlining the programs and services that will meet health needs within its capacity, allocating available resources to meet those needs and identifying the ways in which it will measure the success of its response (programs and services) to those needs.
Metlakatla is currently in Phase I of the planning process (Laying foundations). Metlakatla will be establishing a health management structure, completing a health needs assessment and determining the community health priorities. Once this phase is completed, Phase II is Mapping Directions. A program delivery plan will be developed to reflect the identified priorities and expected outcomes.
Metlakatla currently receives funding for the following on-reserve services: Aboriginal Head Start, Canada Prenatal Nutrition Preogram, Alcohol & Drug Program, Solvent Abuse, Brighter Futures, Mental Health, Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative, Communicable Disease and Injury Prevention, Drining Water Safety Program, Community Health Nurse, Community Health Representative and operating & maintenance support.
Health Canada's website has a wealth of information from: advisories, warning and recalls to food, nutrition, healthy living, etc. Visit their website.
For those members that do not reside in Metlakatla, Northern Health is responsible for the delivery of health care across Northern BC including: acute care, mental health, public health, addictions and home & community care services.
