Treaty Mandate

Why is Metlakatla in Treaty Negotiations?

The mandate of the Treaty negotiation team is to represent the best interests of the Metlakatla Members during the treaty negotiations with the Province and Canada.  Our mandate, given to us by the Metlakatla people, is:

  • To develop a strong, healthy, self-sustaining and self-governing First Nation through the implementation of land and marine use planning, interim and economic measures, and the negotiation of a potential Treaty or an agreement that recognizes our Aboriginal Right to Self-Determination.
  • To provide for cultural, social, spiritual and environmental sustainability;
  • To promote and foster sustainable economic development; and
  • To create a self-sustaining community.
